This story is a chapter from my novel, The Bond of Jhordil.  As a writing excercise I’m trying to convert it to a stand alone short story, which has been more difficult than I’d expect.

What its about

Given a choice between death and slavery Larken made the only decision that made sense.  His new master is a harsh man, and has decided to teach Larken to use a sword.

Larken struggles to understand why a man would teach his slave to fight, and yearns to know what his new master has planned for him.
